Surviving… and Sometimes Thriving
Well, here we are. Still alive, still learning, and somehow still managing to call this homeschooling.
We almost burned down the house twice this week. Once during a “science experiment” that got a little too hands-on, and once because someone (not naming names) thought they could clean the couch electrical buttons with an exorbitant amount of water... But we survived — and honestly, that feels like a pretty accurate description of homeschool life some days.
The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful Chaos
School at home has its good days and bad days, but lately — praise the Lord — we’re finally tipping the scales toward more good than bad. The chaos is starting to look more like controlled chaos, which in my book counts as progress.
Homeschooling isn’t for the faint of heart. You’re wearing a thousand hats — teacher, lunch lady, referee, and emotional support human — all before noon. But even in the frustration and the mess, there’s this deep joy in watching my kids learn and grow in their own wild way.
Unschooling vs. Schooling… and Everything In-Between
Finding the balance between “unschooling” (letting kids learn naturally through life) and “actual education” (making sure they can one day function as literate adults) is hard.
Some days I feel like we’re nailing it. Other days… I’m googling “how much therapy costs for grown homeschool kids.” 😂
There’s no perfect formula. Every family, every child, and every season of learning looks different. And that’s the beauty of it — freedom to find what works, grace to change what doesn’t, and faith to trust that it’s enough.
Emotions, Grace, and Growing Together
Homeschooling stirs up so many emotions: doubt, joy, exhaustion, laughter. Some moments make me want to cry; others make me laugh until I cry.
But through it all, I’m reminded this is exactly where we’re meant to be — learning together, figuring it out as we go, and trusting that even when I mess up (which I definitely will), my kids will know they were loved, guided, and seen.
If Nothing Else… Keep the Fire Extinguisher Handy
So here’s to another week of lessons, laughter, and not setting anything else on fire. 🔥
Because if we’re learning anything around here, it’s that education isn’t about perfection — it’s about perseverance… and maybe keeping a fire extinguisher nearby.
